Who thinks he's winning his trade war? Nobody has seen any of the agreements. He said tariffs would rebalance trade, fix immigration and stop drugs crossing our boarders. None of those things have happened. He claims to have opened up foreign markets for US product, but in every country he's said that about it was already that way.

People who think "trump is winning" need to think about what "winning" means.

Threatening economic nuclear war may create the illusion of concessions but the bad blood it creates will be enduring. The US tourism sector is getting hit hard as tourists from the bullied countries bypass the US. Sales of Tesla and other obviously American brands are collapsing. Driving any obviously American car in the EU or Japan would invite derision.

This will cross into the business to business space as well but it will not be as obvious as companies find suppliers outside of the US. There are relatively few industries where the US is the only supplier (IT services is the one exception).

Under Biden, is not the same as caused by Biden. The increase in inflation was/is a global phenomenon and in fairness to Biden, inflation was significantly less severe in the US than the EU or UK where I live. He received zero credit for this despite it being warranted. That aside, the tariffs and disruption under Trump is all of his own making. You may feel like there is no impact, but the changes Trump is bringing to global trade have only just begun due to the lag effect of advance stockpiling and companies absorbing the costs. This is only a temporary reprieve. The reality is that the US has increased its average tariff rate from something like 2.5 to 18% (the actual figures are listed in the article). You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to realise companies cannot eat these levels of cost increases for long. Ultimately, it will be the US consumer and businesses that pays.

Well, tariffs make imported goods more expensive, which disproportionately hurt the poor because they spend a larger proportion of their income on goods. Tariffs are sales taxes and therefore, regressive.

It's funny they pretend they want to bring back manufacturing and dominance (as if we'd lost that) to the US, but one of the main things that brought all that to the US in the first place was engineering and science - both from home grown boys and girls and from brain drains from elsewhere to here.  

It wasn't the farmers and high school dropouts that made America dominate the world.  It was the R&amp;D, engineers, scientists.  Technology.

I'm aware of two organizations that have suffered under the tariff taxes.. Time will tell however sourcing manufactured end item products from American organizations is proving to be hard and expensive if you can even get a quote.

Tarrifs have been capitulated by most foreign governments and virtually no opposition has been found globally apart from china and Canada which will never unite. Trump’s tariff implementation may have been awkward but it has no formal government coalition disparaging it and every gov has been either fighting it separately or hashing out deals. And even can/china are trying to make away with them with inducements. Trump has achieved his permanent secondary objective of showcasing American supremacy and is pretty close to having tariff deals written by individual countries instead of some farcical rejection or global trend towards third hegemonies like the EU materializing. Trump’s tariff showcase is a very real picture of both American soft power and of how absurd some recent EU/chinese/global think pieces proclaiming the end of American influence are and how the euro or BRICS are right around the corner. American hegemony is not collapsing like sand due to some “trump is president! We’re leaving” handwringing.

There are two things going on here at the same time: 

**1).)** U.S. is looking for an excuse to renegotiate trade with India. Both sides have been trying to negotiate a trade deal for quite some time, but there are huge issues: India will not sell out its agricultural base and the U.S. can’t really put tariffs on digital services from India the way it can physical imports from other nations. This makes India extremely difficult to negotiate with but at the same time, extremely important for America to strike a deal with before India erodes America’s white collar base without giving reciprocal access to its consumer market. You simply can’t put tariffs on your IT guy in Bangalore the way you can car parts from Germany because no physical good is crossing a physical border.

What’s happening now is that the gloves are coming off: America is trying to play hardball and express displeasure with India. The problem is that India is just in the flat out superior negotiating position. America may have a technology edge but this is being eroded and India is trending towards further expansion economically and in terms of human capital. Withholding technological transfer to India will not work, because the technological gatekeeping the U.S. used in the past is already being eroded by China. If the U.S. continues then it opens up the U.S. to IP/technological theft not just from China but India as well, which will be fatal to U.S. domestic industry. 

The U.S. should have renegotiated trade deals with China and India after the 2008 financial crisis but both the Chinese and the Indians were too effective at stalling the negotiations to the point that now they have the upper hand. Now they are trying to make up for lost time and doing too much from too weak of a bargaining position. 

**2.)** The bigger issue is that the recent India - Pakistan conflict exposed America’s position. During the conflict Pakistan could reliably count on diplomatic support from Turkey, China, **and America**. India received no support at all from the Quad during this conflict. The IMF even financially bailed Pakistan out during the conflict and Trump/Vance attempted to mediate on behalf of Pakistan while equivocating the two sides internationally. For India, this was a massive red line. 

Subsequently, Trump invited General Asif Munir (ie not Pakistan’s PM) to the White House to negotiate using Pakistani airspace to bomb Iran. This demonstrated to India that the U.S. simply will never give up Pakistan. 

So now India in a position where it sees that the U.S. is not only unreliable diplomatically but that it will always prioritize relations with its mortal enemy *and* that will try to impede India’s technological development further. 

I’d argue that all of this was very predictable.

I’m not sure there’s much I can add here that hasn’t been said already. It’s a huge mistake for the US to antagonise both India and Brazil at the same time, especially since it’s for idiotic reasons in the first place. 

The best way to get both nations to limit their trade with Russia is to offer them long term stable commitments that help improve them. India has a population of well over 1.4 billion and one that is still growing. 

The other way to get those countries to limit their trade with Russia is to let them see that Russia is an unreliable partner and one that isn’t capable of offering much. That’s something they need to experience on their own terms and not be subject to threats of sanctions or tariffs. 

Biden had a much better grasp of geopolitics.

All I've seen is EU leaders accept the shifting goalposts 3 times while putting up a massive bootlicking show at the NATO summit. I'll never forget this spineless performance.

For all those who keep saying "this was inevitable cause we depend on the USA", guess who we also depend on: China. Yet look at how Von der Leyen treated China.

She flies to Beijing, lectures Xi like he's a naughty student, refuses to offer anything close to mutual concessions, and then acts shocked that relations are cold. 

Meanwhile, with the US, she basically hands over over a trillion euros, accepts 15% tariffs on EU goods, and still calls it a "good deal."

So let me get this straight: when it's the US, we bend over and call it diplomacy. When it's China, a country we also depend on massively for trade and rare earths, we get self-righteous and confrontational?

Let's all stop pretending that this is about economic ties. It's ideological servitude. Von der Leyen isn't protecting European interests. She's burning bridges with one superpower while selling us out to the other.
